Rockstar Games has unveiled a $399.99 collector’s box for Grand Theft Auto VI, but the premium package does not include the game itself. The decision has triggered widespread criticism from fans, who are questioning the price, the selection of merchandise, and Rockstar’s decision to sell the game separately.
Rockstar Games has officially opened pre-orders for the Grand Theft Auto VI: The Goodtime State – Vice City Collection, a limited-edition collector’s box priced at $399.99.
The collection is scheduled to arrive on November 19, 2026, alongside the launch of GTA VI. However, there is one major catch: the $400 collection does not include Grand Theft Auto VI.
Rockstar explicitly states on its official store page that the game is sold separately.
That decision has quickly become the central point of criticism surrounding the collection.
What does the $400 GTA 6 Collector’s Edition include?
Rather than containing a copy of GTA VI, the Vice City Collection is essentially a premium merchandise package built around the fictional world of Leonida, GTA VI’s setting.
According to Rockstar, the box contains 11 items:
1. Macca the Gator Figure
The centerpiece is a 6-inch Macca the Gator figure, based on the fictional character from the in-universe television show Macca the Gator.
The figure also features a stash compartment in its base.
2. Oakley Frogskins Sunglasses
The collection includes a pair of matte-black Oakley Frogskins sunglasses with Prizm Sapphire lenses and a Vice City-themed GTA VI logo.
This is one of the more recognizable real-world branded items in the package.
3. Leonida Keys Crossbody Bag
Buyers also receive a Leonida Keys crossbody bag featuring a ripstop construction, themed lining, woven patches and a custom zipper pull.
4. New Era 9FORTY A-Frame Snapback
The collection includes a New Era 9FORTY A-Frame snapback hat featuring Vice City and Leonida-themed details.
5. Macca the Gator Magnetic Mirror
Another Macca-themed collectible is a pink electroplated magnetic mirror.
Rockstar says it can also be used as a tray or displayed as artwork.
6. Chunkee the Manatee Shot Glass
The collection contains a shot glass featuring Chunkee the Manatee, another fictional character from the GTA VI universe.
7. Vice City Collectible Swizzle Spoon
There is also a decorative Vice City swizzle spoon carrying Vice City and Rockstar branding.
8. Vice City Razor Blade Keychain
The box includes a metallic keychain designed to resemble a razor blade, with GTA VI and Vice City branding.
9. Leonida Keys Enamel Pin Set
Collectors receive nine enamel pins packaged inside a custom metal tin.
10. Leonida Keys Sticker Pack
The collection also contains nine vinyl stickers, packaged in a themed stash bag.
11. Double-Sided Leonida Poster
Finally, buyers receive a double-sided souvenir poster featuring the Leonida landscape.
One side focuses on the fictional Macca the Gator show, while the other provides a view of the full Leonida map.
The biggest controversy: there is no GTA 6 in the box
For many fans, the most surprising aspect isn’t necessarily that Rockstar is selling expensive merchandise.
It is that a product officially positioned as the GTA VI Collector’s Box costs nearly $400 while requiring customers to purchase the actual game separately.
Rockstar’s own product listing makes this clear:
Grand Theft Auto VI game sold separately.
This means someone purchasing the $399.99 collection would still need to buy GTA VI separately to actually play the game.
The situation is particularly notable because Rockstar is also selling GTA VI through separate Standard and Ultimate editions. The Standard Edition includes the game, while the Ultimate Edition adds a collection of digital in-game bonuses.
Why are GTA 6 fans criticizing the collection?
The backlash appears to be coming from several different issues rather than one single complaint.
1. The $400 price
The first and most obvious issue is the price.
At $399.99, the collection is considerably more expensive than a conventional premium game edition.
Fans therefore expected the package to contain something substantial connected directly to the game — potentially the game itself, physical collectibles featuring major characters, or a more elaborate display piece.
Instead, the package contains a mixture of clothing accessories, small collectibles, branded items and a map.
Several reports have described fans as questioning whether the contents justify the price.
2. The game isn’t included
This is the biggest point of criticism.
A consumer spending almost $400 on something marketed around GTA VI might reasonably expect the actual game to be part of the package.
Instead, buyers have to purchase GTA VI separately.
That effectively turns the $400 product into a merchandise-only collector’s box, rather than a complete premium edition of the game.
3. Some fans wanted more traditional GTA collectibles
Another part of the reaction concerns the actual design of the merchandise.
Some fans expected a collector’s package centered around the game’s protagonists, Jason and Lucia, vehicles, weapons, artwork, physical maps or other recognizable elements from GTA VI.
Instead, Rockstar has made Macca the Gator and the fictional Macca the Gator television show a major theme of the collection.
This has divided reactions, with reports noting criticism of the collection’s cartoon-style artwork and overall design.
4. The contents are heavily focused on merchandise
The package contains several relatively small items: stickers, pins, a keychain, a spoon, a shot glass and a mirror.
While these can appeal to dedicated collectors, some fans argue that the combination doesn’t feel like what they expected from a $400 GTA VI collector’s package.
The Oakley sunglasses, New Era hat and crossbody bag are the more substantial everyday-use products in the collection, while many of the remaining pieces are collectibles.
5. The value is difficult to compare with a normal game edition
Another reason the announcement has generated discussion is that Rockstar separates the merchandise from the game itself.
The company’s official support information lists the Standard Edition and Ultimate Edition as the actual game editions. The $399.99 Vice City Collection is instead a separate collector’s merchandise product.
That distinction is important.
Someone could theoretically buy:
GTA VI Standard Edition + Vice City Collection
or
GTA VI Ultimate Edition + Vice City Collection
depending on what they want.
The $400 box isn’t replacing either game edition.
Rockstar is also changing how physical GTA 6 copies work
Another interesting detail is that GTA VI’s physical release itself will not contain a traditional game disc.
Rockstar says the physical version will contain a download code for the game rather than a disc.
Physical buyers will receive a code that can be used for the digital download and pre-loading process.
That makes the absence of a game from the $400 collector’s box even more noticeable to some fans, because Rockstar could theoretically have included a physical package containing a download code.
Instead, the company has kept the game completely separate.
Rockstar is positioning the box as a limited collector’s product
Rockstar describes the Vice City Collection as a premium, limited-edition collectible set rather than simply another version of GTA VI.
The company says the collection is available for pre-order while supplies last, with limited quantities.
It is scheduled to arrive on November 19, 2026.
The Rockstar Store currently lists the price at $399.99.
Is everyone unhappy with it?
Not necessarily.
The criticism online should not be interpreted as every GTA fan rejecting the collection.
There is a clear audience for premium GTA merchandise, particularly among collectors who already plan to purchase the game separately.
For those buyers, the value proposition is different: they are effectively purchasing a limited collection of physical GTA VI merchandise rather than paying $400 for a game.
The strongest criticism is instead focused on the combination of the $399.99 price and the fact that the game is not included.
Why the announcement became such a major GTA 6 story
The reaction is also connected to the enormous expectations surrounding GTA VI.
Rockstar’s next Grand Theft Auto has been one of the most anticipated game releases in years. As a result, virtually every major product announcement connected to the game receives significant attention.
The $400 price immediately made the Vice City Collection newsworthy.
But the fact that buyers don’t actually receive GTA VI in the box transformed the announcement into a broader debate about what a modern “collector’s edition” should contain.
For some collectors, the combination of licensed Oakley sunglasses, a New Era hat, a figure, a Leonida map and other physical items may be exactly what they want.
For other fans, spending nearly $400 and still needing to purchase the actual game separately makes the package difficult to justify.
The bottom line
Rockstar’s $399.99 GTA VI: The Goodtime State – Vice City Collection is not a $400 version of the game.
It is a limited-edition merchandise collection containing 11 physical items inspired by GTA VI’s Leonida setting and the fictional Macca the Gator television show.
The package includes:
- Macca the Gator figure
- Oakley Frogskins sunglasses
- Leonida Keys crossbody bag
- New Era snapback
- Macca magnetic mirror
- Chunkee the Manatee shot glass
- Vice City swizzle spoon
- Razor-blade-style keychain
- Nine-piece enamel pin set
- Nine-piece sticker pack
- Double-sided Leonida map/poster
But it does not include Grand Theft Auto VI.
That omission, combined with the nearly $400 price, is the primary reason the collection has faced strong criticism from sections of the GTA community since its announcement.
Ultimately, whether the collection is worth its asking price depends on how much value an individual collector places on the physical merchandise. Rockstar is selling the box as a premium limited collectible rather than as a complete GTA VI game edition — and that distinction is at the center of the current debate.
